electric buses in Dakar: A new chapter for environmental friendliness

The inspection of an electro-speed bus project in Dakar marked the beginning of the two-day western Africa duty by Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens). The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which was put into operation in May and was financed by the European Investment Bank and the World Bank, is intended to help reduce the environmental problems of the Sengalese capital.

DAKAR, a city that struggles with traffic infarcts and poor air quality, faces major challenges. Despite the growth of the population to over 4 million people, the metropolis suffers from one of the worst air qualities in Africa. The implementation of the electro-speed bus system together with the pre-raid train, which opened in 2021, is an important step in the right direction.

Germany is committed to supporting Senegal in its green transformation. The EU's “Global Gateway” initiative aims to invest up to 300 billion euros in the infrastructure of threshold and developing countries and to secure global influence. Baerbock emphasized the importance of cooperative efforts to tackle the challenges of the future together

Sustainable energy supply in focus

In addition to the electrobus system, Senegal is increasingly focusing on a sustainable power supply. Although the country has recently started to promote oil production and would also like to export natural gas in the future, it has set ambitious goals in the field of renewable energies. According to the international energy agency, Senegal already receives a fifth of its electricity from wind and solar energy. This proportion should increase to 40 percent by 2030.

The Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) with Germany, France and the EU aims to mobilize 2.5 billion euros in public and private means to support the transition to clean energy. These efforts underline the commitment of the Senegal and its international partner for a sustainable future.
