Military juntas found the federal government: Allianz of the Sahel countries founded in Niamey
New Confederation of the Sahel countries for more security and economic growth
NIAMEY (dpa)-The West African Sahel states Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger recently announced the establishment of a new confederation called "Alliance of the Sahel countries" (AES). This initiative aims to strengthen cooperation in the areas of foreign and security policy, to facilitate the free movement of people and goods between the countries and to establish a common investment bank.
The heads of state Colonel Assimi Goïta (Mali), General Abdourahaman Tiani (Niger) and Captain Ibrahim Traoré (Burkina Faso) are currently leading transitional governments that have taken over the power after military coupons. This political change has led to planned elections were postponed or canceled, which has led to tensions within the region.
The Alliance of the Sahel countries was initially launched as a defense alliance, but now it is aimed at a more comprehensive cooperation to address the challenges in the region. In particular, the threats from Islamist terrorist groups have underlined the need for increased cooperation.
The exit of the three countries from the West African Economic Community (Ecowas) has led to tensions with other West African countries. Critics claim that the Sahel states' decision is a manifestation of their dissatisfaction with the supposed dominance of France and other foreign powers over the region.
The approach of the Sahel countries to Russia and the increasing distancing of former partners show a geopolitical change in the region. The Federal Government's efforts to continue the continued operation of a Bundeswehr base in Niamey have failed, which illustrates the growing tensions between the western countries and the Sahel countries.
The upcoming negotiations at the Ecowas summit will deal with the departure of the three countries. It is a challenge because the Ecowas countries are closely linked and form a common currency and business union. The effects of leaving on the economic stability and security of the region are of great importance and require a diplomatic solution.
