New life for the Westentor in Hamm: conversion starts on September 2

In Hamm, important changes are pending: From Monday, September 2, 2024, the construction work on the Westentor begins. The aim of these measures is to make the urban space more functional and attractive, while high ecological standards are observed to take into account climate change.

The upcoming renovation work on the Westentor is part of an extensive project with a budget of around 2.2 million euros. The work is expected to take one year. In order to impair the traffic as little as possible during the construction period, those responsible have decided to carry out most of the work at night.

extensive diversions in bus traffic

The effects on public transport will be significant. From Monday, the Westentor will be completely closed to bus traffic. Therefore, passengers have to expect extensive diversions. Lines 1, 3, 5, 6, 13, N5 and emergency cars are affected. Here are some of the most important changes:

  • The lines in the direction of Hbf.-Willy-Brandt-Platz/West leave the “Oststraße” stop via Antonistraße, Nordenwall, Westenwall and Gustav-Heinemann-Straße.
  • The stops "Hans-Böckler-Platz" and "Weststraße" are moved to the new replacement stop "Hans-Böckler-Platz".
  • The “Westentor” stop is renamed the “Allee Center/Ritter Passage” stop.

In addition, the “Westentor/Stadtwerke” stop is used as a entry and exit stop during the construction period, while the regular stop is no longer operated. Stadtwerke Hamm are also included in the work by starting line work after disassembling the stop roofs.

accessibility and traffic safety

Although bus traffic is significantly impaired, access for pedestrians remains possible in the shopping streets and in front of the shop lines at any time. This was considered essential to ensure retail and accessibility to the shops during the construction work. Ritterstraße and Martin-Luther-Straße remain passable. The aim is to harmonize traffic safety and the need to maintain pedestrian traffic.

In parallel to the work on the Westentor, a construction work on the Südring is also announced, which is expected to be completed at the end of October 2024. This could result in additional changes in the detour routes, whereby the city administration will inform the citizens in good time.

The upcoming renovations on the Westentor in Hamm symbolize a step towards a more environmentally friendly and more attractive urban landscape. It remains to be seen how the construction work will affect daily traffic and accessibility in Hamm.
