The Haskap berry: a promising superfood from Hamm

The Haskap berry currently attracts a lot of attention because it is celebrated as a new "superfood". In addition, it contains antioxidants that are intended to strengthen the immune system and protect against diseases. But what about the cultivation of this berry in Hamm?

A vegetable farm in Hamm dares to cultivate

One of the first attempts in Hamm to grow the Haskapberer, comes from Viertmann’s fruit and vegetables. The company has already planted 20 plants in their fields and hopes for positive results. Peter Viertmann emphasizes the importance of going innovative ways and bringing new products onto the market. However, it turns out that the cultivation conditions in Germany are not ideal for the Haskap berry. Early flowering times in May can cause frost damage and thus impair the harvest.

Although the Haskap berry is still a niche product that is unknown to many consumers, interest in healthy eating shows a potential for the future. Despite the higher prices compared to local berries, most customers still prefer domestic products.

future prospects for cultivation in Hamm

Some fruit farmers, such as the Wever Hof or the Kraienhemke courtyard, have not yet dealt with the cultivation of Haskap berries and remain with proven varieties such as the blueberry. Nevertheless, there is a growing interest in healthy foods, as the expansion of a renowned Munich gastructure according to Hamm shows.

The cultivation of the Haskap berry in Hamm may still bring challenges, but with a view to the health benefits and the increasing health awareness of consumers, this could be a promising future perspective for the region.
