Security concerns in the EU: survey shows concerns of the citizens

concern about the security situation in the European Union is strongly pronounced among the population. A current survey carried out on behalf of the European Commission shows that around two thirds of EU citizens are worried about the security of the Union. It is striking that 47 percent of those surveyed state that they will feel “quite worried” in the next five years, while 17 percent are even “very concerned”.

security situation as a central topic

This survey, which was carried out from late June to the beginning of July and in which more than 25,000 people aged 15 and over, emphasizes the considerable security concerns, which are particularly pronounced in Portugal (77 percent). In Germany, too, 54 percent of those surveyed state that they are "quite" or "very" concerned.

peaceful perspectives for the future

Despite these worries, almost half of the EU citizens indicate to look optimistically into the future. About 58 percent show a positive attitude, while 37 percent see the future rather pessimistic. This ambivalent attitude could indicate that there are both bright spots and challenges that need to be mastered.

challenges of the Union

The greatest concerns regarding the current challenges for the EU concern the war in Ukraine, which 50 percent of those surveyed see as the greatest current challenge. Other important topics are irregular migration (41 percent) and environmental problems as well as climate change (35 percent). These results clarify that the citizens of the EU have a great need for security and stability, both with regard to geopolitical and environmental aspects.

priorities of the citizens

When it comes to which topics the EU should prioritize, the environment and climate change as well as irregular migration are top priority (33 percent each). Ensuring security and defense is considered important by 29 percent of those surveyed, while 25 percent consider the war in Ukraine to be priority. These results show that the citizens expect comprehensive and multi-layered approaches in EU policy.

economic confidence unclear

The opinions about the EU's economic performance in the next five years are shared. About 50 percent of the respondents are optimistic, while 45 percent are skeptical. These divergent views of how the economic situation could develop underline the uncertainties with which many citizens are confronted.

The importance of this survey should not be underestimated because it provides valuable insights into the concerns and hopes of the citizens of the European Union. The challenges that the EU is facing are complex and require a balanced action to ensure security, social stability and economic well -being for all members of the Union.
