In the late evening of September 5, 2024, investigators from the Hanover customs investigation office were called to a warehouse in Werther, in the Häger district, which turned out to be a true hiding place of an illegal cigarette empire. Here an incredible 29,470,000 untrained cigarettes were discovered - and that without a tax banderol!

The turmoil started with a dramatic attempt to break in. An attentive resident noticed suspicious figures at the warehouse and addressed them. But instead of information, he was attacked by the criminals and slightly injured. In a heroic gesture, his mother hurried to help him and immediately alerted the police. While the authorities arrived, incredible ten perpetrators escaped - a real hide -and -seek game!

The hiding place of the cigarette empire

After the act of violence, the customs investigation office took control of the situation and started a comprehensive search of the warehouse. The result: a fully functional cigarette production line and an impressive packaging street. But that was not all - the emergency services also found sleeping places for up to 13 workers who were apparently employed here without any legal foundations.

But the shock message didn't stop here! In the dark corners of the hall, an additional 7,100 kilograms were discovered as well as various materials such as filters, glue, paper and film for illegal production. You can only imagine the huge scope of this operation!

The big hunt for the masterminds

Supported by the Bielefeld and Gütersloh police and the technical relief organization, the investigators did everything they can to stop the machinations of the cigarette mafia. The extensive campaign continued until Friday and is part of an ongoing investigation under the direction of the Bielefeld public prosecutor. The customs investigation office instructed to identify the masterminds and backers.
