Prime Minister Weil demands agreement and change of course in the SPD

SPD - Prime Minister Weil: "Scholz is number one" - politics

Hannover (dpa) - In a clear statement, Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) emphasizes that Olaf Scholz continues to hold the leading position within the SPD. "Olaf Scholz is number one in the SPD. I believe that I am also agreed with a very large majority of the SPD members," said the German press agency in Hanover.

The current political situation is characterized by tensions within the government coalition. "Now with the agreement on the federal budget, we have the chance to start again in the traffic light coalition. But if the traffic light coalition continues to argue as much as before, the Federal Chancellor alone will be able to move relatively little.

Criticism of the current cooperation of the traffic light coalition

The Prime Minister of Lower Saxony also criticized the numerous conflicts within the federal government of SPD, Greens and FDP. Despite some successes, such as the agreement on a draft for the Federal Budget 2025, many positive steps were overshadowed by internal arguments. "I would like a completely different collaboration at the traffic light: a traffic light where you talk to each other and the plans afterwards represents the outside. Then you will also achieve a different effect," said Weil.

European election results: A deep crisis for the SPD

With regard to the recent European elections, in which the SPD received only 13.9 percent of the vote and landed behind the AfD, we were concerned. "It is not easy for me to endure that the AfD is in front of the SPD," he said. The result of young voters and workers who traditionally belong to the SPD's core clientele is particularly disappointing. "From this we will have to draw our conclusions. I think that after this result you shouldn't just go to the agenda," emphasized Weil.

The demographic shifts and the political landscape in Germany emphasize the importance of social topics. Weil explained: "It can be clearly seen that the social question in Germany has to take greater importance than it has so far. That must be the core of our politics."

future prospects of the SPD

In order to gain in importance again, the SPD has to focus on the problems of the citizens. "The SPD is always strong when people have the impression that they deal with our problems and not with any other things. And of course the SPD also expects concrete progress, for example at the minimum wage," concluded the Lower Saxony Prime Minister.

The challenges of the SPD at national and European level are clearly visible, and a targeted focus is on the social concerns of citizens in order to gain trust and support again.
