Lower Saxony fights: three quarters of the waters in a catastrophic condition!

In a terrifying analysis, scientists found that most small rivers and streams in Lower Saxony are in an alarming state. Of the 259 water sections examined, a whopping 165 show a moderate to poor habitat quality. Well -known waters such as the fissse in Hanover and the Hainholzbach in Burgdorf are particularly affected. A main problem are straightened water runs and a poor water for water that rob the rivers their natural character.

The European water framework guidelines set the goal of bringing all surface waters into good condition by 2027 - a project that has so far been missed. The scientist Aletta Bonn from the Helmholtz Center draws attention to the urgency: "We have a implementation problem and we only have two years left for it." The Nature Conservation Association of Lower Saxony (NABU) also raises the alarm and criticizes that many watercourses are still deformed and degraded from the past. Lower Saxony has provided 26 million euros for renaturation measures, but time is pushing and consequences are not yet sufficiently visible. As reports www.haz.de , the question remains whether changes can occur in good time.
