West-Nil-virus discovered: Horse in Burgwedel shows symptoms for the first time
The West Nil virus, known for its potentially dangerous effects on animals and humans, has now also reached the Hanover region. A horse from the municipality of Burgwedel was tested positively for this animal disease, the regional administration reported on Friday. This marks the first proven case in this region.
After the horse had shown neurological symptoms such as muscle tremors and general weakness, a test was arranged. After symptomatic treatment, the animal now shows progress and seems to recover. This development highlights the health risks that the virus can represent for both horses and people.
a growing challenge
In the past few weeks, several infections have been registered in Lower Saxony with the West Nil virus in horses. A total of ten cases have been found since mid -August, with the Burgwedel region only now being added. The other affected animals were located in the Lüchow-Dannenberg, Rotenburg (Wümme), Uelzen, Celle, Gifhorn, Vechta and even in the city of Braunschweig. In many cases, however, the infected animals show no symptoms that requires continuous monitoring.
The West Nil virus is mainly transmitted by different mosquito species and has a natural transmission cycle between birds and the mosquitoes. People and horses are misconception of the virus, which means that they cannot develop further and is not a risk of infection for other animals or humans. Despite this fact, it remains important for pet owners to be vigilant and protect their animals accordingly.
In the fight against the virus, there are vaccines approved for horses that can prevent the disease from being severe. In view of the increasing number of cases, the constant veterinary vaccination commission advises to have horses vaccinated throughout the Low German lowlands. The last known infection in Lower Saxony before the current case took place in 2020 and affected a horse in the Helmstedt district, followed by another case in 2023 in the Grafschaft-Bentheim district.
early detection crucial
The early detection of symptoms in animals is crucial to ensure timely treatment. As already mentioned, symptoms of the West Nil virus can include muscle tremors and paralysis, and rapid intervention can significantly improve the recovery of the affected animals. The detection of the virus in the Hanover region should serve as a warning signal for animal owners, to pay attention to the well -being of their animals and, if necessary, take preventive measures.
Since the first proof of the West Nil virus in Germany in 2018 at a Bartauz in Saxony-Anhalt, the events show that the virus is not only a risk for birds, but also a health risk in horses. This increases the need to remain vigilant in epidemiological developments and to carry out further research on the virus and its effects on different animal species.
