Drunk driving on Rügen: 50-year-old causes accident with children

On the picturesque island of Rügen, there was a questionable incident in road traffic on Tuesday, which is not only important for those involved, but also for the police. A 50-year-old driver from the Harz was approved by a risky maneuver, the consequences of which must now be determined. The accident had taken place on the B96, an important traffic artery, when the man tried to adapt to a traffic situation that was not enjoyable.

The incident occurred at a traffic light where the driver of a jeep was waiting behind a car with a mother and her two children. Instead of being patient, the driver from Halberstadt decided to change a lane. However, this happened at an extremely unfavorable time: a 20-year-old Audi driver just came to turn. The impact was inevitable and sent the jeep directly into the standing vehicle of the 47-year-old woman from Schwerin.

Alcoholic driver behind the tax

Obviously, alcohol influenced the driver's judgment. The subsequent examination showed that he had been behind the wheel with an alcohol value of 2.19 per thousand. The officials were quickly on hand and noticed the typical smell of alcohol, which immediately led to a breath alcohol test. The result was alarming and required a blood sample to determine the exact amount of alcoholic substances in the blood.

Fortunately, both the two children who were located in the car of the Schwerin and the mother herself remained unharmed. After the first fright and the necessary contact with the police, they were able to continue their journey, but they remember the circumstances of the accident. However, the damage to the vehicles was significant: both cars had to be towed, and the total damage was estimated at around 28,000 euros.

Legal consequences for the driver

For the impatient vacationer from the Harz, it is now serious. He is not only faced with criminal consequences for hazardous to road traffic, but also has to face the challenges that arise from his current situation. Without a driver's license and a damaged car, it will be difficult for him to start the way back.

The deeds of the driver not only raise questions about his behavior, but also reflect a bigger problem on our streets: the dangers of alcohol at the wheel and the uncertainty that such misconduct brings with it for other road users. At a time when security campaigns and information about alcohol abuse are becoming increasingly important, the incident on Rügen remains an urgent memory of the responsibility that every driver has to bear.

It is important to be aware that the crowd in traffic not only leads to damage to property, but can also endanger other people's lives. The police therefore appeal to all road users, patiently, responsibly and, above all, soberly behind the wheel. This is not only important for your own security, but also for the community of road users as a whole.

Alcohol: A German problem

Alcohol at the wheel remains a serious problem in Germany. According to statistics from the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), around 18,000 accidents in Germany were due to alcohol -related driving errors in 2020. This number makes it clear how dangerous driving under the influence of alcohol is. The legal limits for blood alcohol concentration (BAK) are clearly regulated: from 0.5 per mille, one is considered to be accurate. In the case of higher values, the legislature provides that the drivers must also count on criminal consequences.

In the case of the Rügen accident driver, who was traveling with 2.19 per thousand, the danger is serious for all road users. Statistics show that the likelihood of causing an accident with personal injury increases exponentially with increasing alcohol level. The legislator has therefore not only established punishments, but also launched prevention measures and educational campaigns to sensitize the population to the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Meaning of traffic education and prevention

In order to minimize the dangers in road traffic, extensive educational and prevention measures are necessary. In recent years, many organizations, such as the Transport Wacht Germany, have initiated various programs that are aimed specifically at young drivers. These initiatives should promote a better understanding of the risks of alcohol and drugs at the wheel and aim to develop a more responsible driving behavior.

In addition, technologies such as digital breathing tests and driving assistance systems have shown considerable progress in improving traffic safety. Driving assistance systems, as are often present in modern vehicles, help drivers to be more secure on the move, for example by offering speed monitoring or a lane departure assistant.

Legal consequences and follow for the cause of the accident

The legal consequences for the 50-year accident are serious. In addition to the withdrawal of the driver's license, the man must expect a fine or even imprisonment, depending on the severity of the offense and possible criminal records. The authorities have the opportunity to rely on § 315c of the Criminal Code (StGB), which regulates the endangerment of road traffic. This legislation serves to protect traffic safety and underlines zero tolerance policy towards drifting.

In addition, the man could also be liable under civil law if he has caused damage to the other vehicles and any personal injury. In such cases, the injured parties can make claims for damages, which can lead to a significant financial burden on the person who caused the accident.
