Neckar promenade in Heidelberg: A dream becomes a test of patience
Neckar promenade in Heidelberg: A dream becomes a test of patience
Heidelberg, a city that is known for its impressive castle and the picturesque old bridge, has been looking for opportunities for years to improve the connection between citizens with their beloved Neckar. Access to the river is currently severely restricted, which affects the quality of life of the population.
The city is currently organizing the “Summer on the River” event, which offers people the opportunity to enjoy the proximity to the Neckar. On a sunny weekend, many Heidelbergers crowded on the B37, which is usually frequented by around 20,000 cars per day. Instead of the usual commuter traffic, citizens can be on the go to enjoy the beautiful weather and experience a relaxing atmosphere along the river.
long -term efforts for a Neckar promenade
The city of Heidelberg has been pursuing the goal for 16 years to build a four -kilometer long -tavern. This should run from Karlstor to the Wieblinger weir and create views and entrances to the Neckar. Nevertheless, only a small section has existed so far, the Neckarlauer, which already clearly shows how much potential is in a beautiful piece of river.
This partially produced promenade, which cost 1.5 million euros, even received an award for her architecture. The idea behind the entire project is to give city residents more access to the water and to create a recreation zone that stands out from the noisy B37. However, the big goal, the second section of this promenade, remains in the planning.
obstacles to the promenade
Mayor Dr. Eckart Würzner sees a barrier in the B37 that makes it difficult for the Neckar promenade to become a reality. The financial means are missing, and various regulations, especially when building on the water, represent additional challenges. Alexander Krohn, who is responsible in the city planning office, points out that the construction of the Neckarlauer should initially begin at the end of 2025, several years after the period originally planned. To round off the big whole, there are plans for additional upgrading elements such as a four-lane cycling speed that is supposed to harmonize with the promenade. The idea is to enrich this promenade through various adventure stations. Among other things, a student stage, a terrace to the old town and a floating bridge are planned
The association "Neckarorte", which has been active since 2016, has set itself the goal of driving the planning forward and making the Neckarufer even more alive. Nils Herbstrieth, the club manager, emphasizes how important meeting places are where people of different backgrounds can come together to exchange ideas. The city of Heidelberg fully supports this project.
But despite the positive approaches, it should be noted that the challenges, among other things, should not be underestimated by the busy B37 and the bureaucratic hurdles in construction. The implementation of these plans, which Heidelberg should make an even more attractive city, remains uncertain. This uncertainty throws a shadow on the hopes of the Heidelbergers to soon enjoy carefree days on the Neckar.
Waiting for a living bank promenade
The citizens are aware that a design area close to the river and an appropriate access to the water would contribute significantly to improve their quality of life. The patience of the population is put to the rehearsal year to year, while waiting for the final concept and implementation of the Neckar promenade. Will the Neckar soon be part of Heidelberg's life again, or will the B37 continue to hinder the desired connection to the water?
Current state of the planning and challenges
The plans for the Neckaruferpromenade in Heidelberg are still in the Mach. Between 2020 and 2021, numerous workshops and citizen participations took place to collect the ideas and wishes of the Heidelberg population and to include them in project planning. These citizens' forums were crucial to develop a feeling for the needs and preferences of future users.
One of the greatest challenges in implementing the Neckaruferpromenade is compliance with numerous environmental law regulations. Construction sites in water protection areas and along federal waterways are subject to strict requirements to protect the Neckar natural area. These regulations can significantly delay planning and construction, which is incomprehensible to the citizens.
economic aspects and funding
The financial means for the project come partly from urban households, but also from state and federal programs. The SDW (urban development and business development) in particular has an eye to redesign the bank of the Neckar. Different support programs are intended to increase both tourism and the quality of life of the citizens.
In an overview of the city of Heidelberg, various funding is listed, which are also available as part of the “City on the River” project. These include scholarships for innovative urban development concepts and grants for environmental protection measures. However, the exact amounts and shares are updated regularly and depend on the progress in the respective project section.
ecological importance of the Neckaruferpromenade
In addition to promoting the quality of life, the planned Neckaruferpromenade also has ecological goals. By creating areas for pedestrians and cyclists, habitats for many animal species should be preserved and promoted. This is particularly important because the Neckar is a habitat for a variety of plants and animals. Biotope composite systems that are to be created as part of the promenade help to maintain biodiversity and to strengthen the resilience of the ecosystem.Cooperation with environmental organizations is also sought for the implementation of these environmental aspects. Projects for renaturation and creating natural bank zones could receive additional support in order to stabilize and improve the entire ecologically valuable landscape in the long term.
collaboration with local initiatives and foundations
The association "Neckarorte" plays a crucial role in planning and implementing ideas on the Neckar. Together with the city, the association is working on increasing the quality of life on site and connecting people with their river. In addition to regular events and cultural offers, workshops and information events are also organized in order to actively involve citizens in the planning.
In addition, there are cooperation with local foundations that are committed to urban development and environmental loungers. These collaborations are important to achieve a variety of support and to secure the projects in the long term. The inclusion of a wide range of interest groups is to achieve a broad acceptance of the planned measures in the population and thus to strengthen identification with the river and the city.
