historical transport: submarine U17 travels on the last trip
A remarkable moment in the history of the German Navy is imminent: the submarine U17, a veteran from almost forty years of service, embarks on his last trip. The focus is not only on transporting the former underwater vehicle, but also the attention of numerous interested parties who follow the path of the submarine.
In July 2024, the U17 will be brought to Sinsheim by the Technikmuseum in Speyer. The route leads the submarine over the majestic Rhine and through several cities along the Neckar. A transport that not only has logistical challenges, but also presented a piece of military history in an impressive way.
The 206a submarine, with a length of about 48 meters and an underwater displacement of 500 tons, was once proud to serve the German Navy in North and Baltic Sea. Now, after his outstanding position in December 2010, it will receive a new provision as a museum ship in the Sinsheim Technology Museum.
After years of inactivity in Wilhelmshaven, the future of the U17 2021 was decided. The Sinsheim Technology Museum acquired the submarine as a valuable exhibit. The elaborate transport from northern Germany to the southwest was characterized by challenging maneuvers and the crossing tight bridge constructions.
The last stage of the transport, from the Technikmuseum Speyer to the destination in Sinsheim, marks the end of a trip that was accompanied by the interest and curiosity of many people. From summer 2025, the U17 will receive visitors from all over the world as a completely restored museum piece and impressively convey its moving story in an impressive way.
A historical moment for the naval history and a significant step in storage and presentation of military artifacts for future generations.
