an unusual transport: the submarine U17 on tour
An unusual sight offered the residents along the Neckar when the decommissioned submarine U17 arrived from Speyer to Sinsheim in Heidelberg on his transport trip. On Monday it is planned that the nine-meter high submarine will cross the old bridge, which is a logistical challenge.
The difficulties of transport
In order to overcome the barrier of too low bridge heights, the 350-ton submarine had to be tilted specifically on the side so that it can fit under the different bridges. The old bridge in Heidelberg is particularly well known for its limited height, which made the transport of the submarine a tricky task.
an impressive reception in Mannheim
The transport of the submarine was welcomed by the Mayor Christian Specht (CDU) on Friday in the industrial port in Mannheim with a remarkable greeting. A traditional water fountain was sprayed as a nautical greeting by a fire -fighting boat to celebrate the arrival of the U17.
a lengthy transport process
The transport of the submarine will take a total of four weeks and comprises various stages that take place across water and finally across the street. The municipalities along the transport route plan numerous festivals and events to celebrate the arrival of the submarine. The entire project costs around two million euros and is largely financed by donations.
Once arrived in the Technology Museum in Sinsheim, the submarine U17 will be admired for visitors, as part of a unique exhibition on Maritime History and Technology.
