U17 submarine on the way to Heidelberg: an unusual journey along the Neckar
historical submarine U17 The old bridge in Heidelberg
happens spectacularlyThe unknown submarine U17, which was previously located in the industrial port in Mannheim, is on the way to Heidelberg before it will find a new home in the Technikmuseum in Sinsheim. The journey of the 350 ton monster has already attracted a lot of attention because it is transported from the Rhine via the Neckar.
The journey of the U17 submarine to Heidelberg is accompanied by a special challenge: to pass different bridges, including the famous old bridge in Heidelberg, the nine-meter high submarine has to be tilted regularly by more than 70 degrees. It is planned next Monday that the U17 will cross the old bridge around 10 a.m., which will certainly attract many onlookers.
The spectacular journey of the historic submarine U17 is part of a larger project that will cost around two million euros. Thanks to donations, the transport and the subsequent exhibition of the submarine are financed in the Sinsheim Technology Museum. Preparations for transport include removing old batteries and weights to make the submarine easier, as well as the installation of a special tilting device.
The arrival of the U17 in the Technikmuseum in Sinsheim is planned for July 28 and will surely be another highlight for all those interested in history and technology. The journey of the submarine through the landscape of Baden-Württemberg is not only a logistical masterpiece, but also a tribute to the maritime history of the region. - nag
