Majestic U17 submarine-a logistics master performance in the heart of Haßmersheim
Great spectacle in Haßmersheim: submarine U17 reaches the mainland
The small town of Haßmersheim with almost 5100 inhabitants experienced an extraordinary event on Saturday morning, which mobilized the entire community. A submarine that had started from Speyer in the past two weeks and was on the Neckar was spectacularly landed. This logistical masterpiece required the cooperation of many to safely transport the 48-meter-long and 350-ton submarine with the name U17 onto the street.
An impressive sight: submarine U17 leaves its natural element
Numerous curious people gathered in the early morning to observe the structure. The preparations began shortly after 4 a.m. when the submarine, which had been on the river bank since Tuesday, had to be moved from the pontoon to a low loader. The river submarine was turned 90 degrees, a challenge that claimed the entire width of the river. It was only around 10 a.m. the submarine was completely ready for road transport.
The crowd on the bank watched the procedure intently when the truck slowly rolled the submarine off the pontoon. The crew of the freight forwarder Kübler concentrated to ensure the safety of the transport, while the residents pursued the scene with enthusiasm and applause.
on the way to the Technikmuseum: The trip of U17 continues
After the submarine has been successfully brought ashore, the spectacle is now moving to the streets. The transport of U17 comprises a distance of around 50 kilometers that leads through various cities and municipalities. On Sunday morning, the convoy moves to drive via Siegelsbach, Bad Rappenau, Ittlingen and several Sinsheim districts, whereby road closures have to be set up.
The municipality of Haßmersheim meanwhile says goodbye to the submarine, which gave them a big celebration and several cannon shots. The story of U17 will continue in the coming days until it will be held home on July 28th in the Sinsheim Technology Museum.
