The EU Security: Almost two thirds of the citizens are worried about the future

Brussels (dpa) - A current survey shows that there is a great interest in security within the European Union, while at the same time there is an optimistic look at the future development of the community. In the survey, which was carried out by the IPSOS Polling Research Institute on behalf of the European Commission, 64 percent of the EU citizens surveyed expressed concern about the security of the EU.

safety concerns of the population

In the survey, 47 percent of the participants stated that they were rather concerned about the security policy situation in the next five years, and another 17 percent were among the very concerned. Particularly acute security fears seem to be common in Portugal, where 77 percent of the respondents express their concerns. Germany is in midfield with 54 percent in terms of general concern.

The most important challenges for the EU

The survey identifies the war in Ukraine as the greatest current challenge for the EU, which agreed 50 percent of those surveyed. The topic of irregular migration is also one of the urgent problems about which 41 percent of those surveyed are concerned. Environmental concerns, including climate change, were mentioned as a pressing topic by 35 percent of the participants.

priorities for the European agenda

The study results show that environmental and climate goals and irregular migration are top priority when it comes to which topics the EU should prioritize (33 percent each). Security and defense as well as the war in Ukraine are also high on the list with 29 and 25 percent.

optimism despite challenges

Although there are legitimate concerns about security, 58 percent of the respondents expressed an optimistic perspective on the future of the EU. Only 37 percent have a pessimistic view. This duality in the perception of the situation could indicate the trust of citizens in the ability of the EU to deal with the changing challenges.

binary views on the economic future

In terms of the economic prospects of the EU in the next five years, opinions have been shared: 50 percent of the citizens are optimistic, while 45 percent are skeptical. This split view of the economy underlines the uncertainties that some EU citizens are confronted with, while others believe in a positive development.

Overall, the survey shows how important the topics of security, environment and migration are for the citizens of the European Union. The data -based analysis of these challenges is required by European institutions to develop effective measures to improve the quality of life and to ensure the security of their citizens.
