Waffenruhe in sight? US government reports on progress in the Israel Hamas Agreement
In Washington there is progress in the negotiations between Israel and Hamas, which provide for an ceasefire and the release of hostages. According to a high-ranking representative of the US government, 90 percent of the agreement have been determined. It was announced that 14 of a total of 18 paragraphs of the deal have already been completed. However, despite the positive news, there are still some stumbling blocks, especially in the conditions for the exchange of Israeli hostages with Palestinian prisoners and with regard to the withdrawal of Israeli military staff from the Gaza Strip.
The plan stipulates that several hundred Palestinian prisoners are released in order to free a certain number of Israeli hostages. This could also include prisoners who were sentenced to life imprisonment for their actions. A worrying detail is that six hostages were recently killed, which made negotiations significantly more difficult. This development has reduced the number of hostages available for exchange and was described as tragic and terrible. In addition, Hamas has threatened to continue hosting, which increases the pressure on everyone involved.
structures and negotiations
The proceeds not only include Israel and Hamas, but are also accompanied by the influences of Qatar and Egypt who act as an intermediary. But despite these diplomatic efforts, the conversations are not really progressing. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is under immense pressure, especially after the latest fatal incidents. Nevertheless, he adheres to the control of the controversial Philadelphi corridor, which forms the border between Gaza and Egypt. This region plays a central role in the military strategies of both sides, and both the Hamas and Egypt demand a withdrawal of the Israeli troops.
The US representative emphasized that the Philadelphi corridor 'agreement is not mentioned in concrete terms. Nevertheless, a withdrawal of the Israeli armed forces from over -populated areas of the Gaza Strip is sought. However, one dispute is whether the Philadelphi corridor belongs to these densely populated areas. In the past few weeks, Israel has submitted a proposal that would deduct a significant part of the military from this corridor. According to the plan, a complete deduction of the Israeli forces is only intended in the second phase of the deal.
