Wolf Protection in Schleswig-Holstein: Successful management and coexistence
Wolf Protection in Schleswig-Holstein: Successful management and coexistence
In Schleswig-Holstein, the return of the wolf can be felt, with the identification of a new wolf pack. This discovery not only leads to positive progress in species protection, but also shows a successful interaction between humans and nature. Environment Minister Tobias Goldschmidt (Greens) commented on this topic during a visit to the Langenlehsten region in the Duchy of Lauenburg. "This is a great success for species protection in Schleswig-Holstein," he emphasized.
The role of wolf management
The identification of the wolf pack was enabled by the observations of wild cameras, the parent animals and their puppies hold. A special feature of this pack is the cross-border distribution, because the puppies were born in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, while the parents have been living in Schleswig-Holstein for a long time. Christina Lerch from the Ministry of the Environment added: "That is why our eastern neighboring country is considered a home of the pack."
The challenges of pasture farming
The protection of grazing animals, especially sheep and goats, is a central challenge in areas where wolves live. Heike Griem, a shepherd with around 2,000 animals on the region's heath areas, has adapted to this problem. Their pasture animals are protected by wolf -repellent fences and eleven Pyrenäenberg dogs that act as a guard in the region. Minister Goldschmidt emphasized that this example shows how the pasture industry can work in harmony with the return of the wolf.
coexistence of humans and wildlife
Matthias Hoppe-Kossak, the director of the State Office for the Environment, praised the energetic commitment of GRIEM and emphasized the importance of preventive herd protection measures. "Due to a well -positioned wolf management and the initiative of the pet owners, conflicts between wolves and grazing animals can be minimized," he said, referring to the possibilities of a low -conflict coexistence in such regions.
outlook and meaning for the region
Currently, three wolf packs have been proven in Schleswig-Holstein, which are located in various areas of the region. This development is not only a step to maintain wolf population, but also an opportunity for the region to become a model for species protection and pasture farming. The cooperation between shepherds, conservationists and authorities could promote sustainable use of nature and thus also influences the local community.
