Holzen, Deutschland - On January 27, 2025, the district of Holzminden commemorates the victims of the National Socialist regime as part of a memorial event. This takes place in connection with the international day to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust, which has been legally anchored in Germany since 1996. The Bundestag is particularly commemorating the victims of euthanasia on this day.

The memorial event in the Holzminden district is celebrated on February 2 and organized by various local institutions, including the district of Holzen, the municipality of Holzen and the Heimat- und History Association (HGV). On January 27, 1945, Soviet soldiers freed the Auschwitz extermination camp, where there were still around 7,000 people at that time. Auschwitz is still a symbol for the crimes of the National Socialists, in the course of which at least 1.1 million people were murdered between 1940 and 1945, of which over 90 percent of Jewish women.

The memorial event in Holzminden is in accordance with global memory initiatives, which was launched by the UN in 2005. This day should not only commemorate the victims, but also to clarify the atrocities and persecution during National Socialism, which received a legal basis with the introduction of the Nuremberg laws in 1935.

The patronage of the event has taken over District Administrator Michael Schünemann, which encourages participation in the memorial event.
