Fascinating discoveries: summer excavation at the Bromacker fossil camp in the Thuringian Forest

Expedition on the Bromacker takes visitors into the world of the Ursaurians

In the middle of the picturesque Thuringian forest, more precisely at the Bromacker, an important fossil deposit, an internationally occupied team of around 40 scientists is going on the footsteps of past times. This year's summer excavation, which will last until August 9

The researchers come from different countries such as Italy, France, Canada and the Netherlands and form a versatile team that researches the evolution of herbivores and modern agricultural Ökosystems. Last year, more than 300 finds could be made on the bromacker, including partial skeletons, bones of rare species of urination and numerous other remains of plants, insects, limbs and vertebrates.

The excavations in this idyllic landscape are also accessible to the public. Visitors have the opportunity to look over their shoulders during their work and take part in German and English-language tours. Special events for children and family days round off the offer and make it possible for everyone interested to immerse yourself in the fascinating world of prehistory.

The research project on the Bromacker, which is supposed to continue until 2025, is a collaboration between the Schloss Friedenstein Gotha Foundation, the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, the UNESCO Global Geopark Thuringia Inselsberg-Drei and the Museum of Nature History Berlin. With this interdisciplinary approach, the scientists hope that a deeper insight into past ecosystems and thus also into the history of our planet.
