Mushrooms in autumn: toxic surprise from the wrong mushroom!

Jena, Deutschland - mushroom lovers watch out! Researchers from the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Leibniz Hki have published alarming knowledge about the fatal Muscarin mushroom poison. The fly fungus, known for its fatal properties, contains this neurotoxin, but also other mushroom types such as rispilzes and funnel. The latest studies show that muscarine is often stored in a harmless precursor that is only released when the fungus is violated - for example by cutting or cooking.

Dangerousness increases because the hidden muscarin and already actively released poison can become a double threat. "Food must be poisoned", the motto could be, while the symptoms of poisoning - from nausea to cardiac arrest - are so serious that they can also be fatal! This findings could help doctors and toxicologists to better recognize and treat potential poisoning. The study has been published in the renowned specialist magazine applied chemistry and once again shows how important the correct identification of edible fungi is.
