Strengthen groundwater balance: Innovation in Gardelegen for sustainable water use

"Innovation in the water management: href = 'https: //die-nachrichten.net/sachsen/innovatives-pilotprojekt-in-gardelegen- Grundwasserpegel-stabilization- and-water consumption-optimieren/'> Gardelegen starts pilot project against extreme weather "

The city of Gardelegen in the Altmark reacts to the effects of heavy rain and drought with an innovative water project. In view of the Dürresommer 2018, which hit the region particularly hard, the Gardelegen Water Association relies on a sustainable solution to strengthen the groundwater balance. The focus is on using cleaned waste water to stabilize the groundwater level, especially in the dry summer months.

Supported by a promotion of 780,000 euros from the state of Saxony-Anhalt, a pilot project is launched in Gardelegen in order to no longer only manage cleaned sewage in rivers, but to be targeted into the ground. The groundwater level should be stabilized outside of water protection areas and also maintained during drying times.

Environment Minister Armin Willingmann emphasizes the importance of modern water management in the face of increasing extreme weather events such as heavy rain and drought. The aim is to stabilize the area water budgets in the long term and to adapt to the new climatic conditions. This innovative procedure is also intended to serve as a model for other regions in order to be prepared for the challenges of climate change.

in cooperation with the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences

The implementation of the project in Gardelegen takes place in close cooperation with the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences, which scientifically accompanies the project. By expanding the sewage treatment plant by a trial system on a pilot scale, possibilities for the efficient use of cleaned wastewater are researched. If the concept has been successful, it could also be used at the state level, as the Ministry of the Environment emphasizes.

The initiative in Gardelegen is an important step towards a sustainable and sustainable water management that proactively encounters the challenges of climate change. The targeted use of cleaned wastewater not only strengthens the groundwater balance, but also a contribution to adapting to the climatic changes.
