Heat check: Rhineland-Palatinate fights against dwindling green spaces
In a recent study by German Environmental Aid (DUH), German cities were evaluated with regard to their suitability for heat. The results from Rhineland-Palatinate, where three cities-Ludwigshafen, Worms and Mainz-are particularly concerned with a high seal of the area and a lack of green areas.
Dangers due to increasing sealing
According to the DUH's surveys, it can be seen that in German cities there are increasingly covering areas with impermeable materials such as concrete. This represents a significant health risk, since the lack of shade -giving green areas and the non -stored rainwater leads to heating up the temperatures. Currently over 50 hectares are sealed nationwide, which underlines the need for urgently needed measures to improve urban climate conditions.
Red card for the problems with problems
The study names Ludwigshafen as the strongest sealed city nationwide. Other affected cities in Rhineland-Palatinate are Worms and Mainz. This high sealing rate goes hand in hand with a lack of green areas. While natural vegetation ensures a better microclimate, the citizens of these cities lack effective opportunities to cool off in extreme heat.
exemplary cities in the Hitze-Check
Contrary to negative developments, there are positive examples in Germany. A total of 25 cities have received a “green card” from German environmental aid, which means that they have sufficient green spaces and are not very sealed. These success stories could serve as a model for other municipalities and urban planners to take effective measures against the heat problem.
Neustadt on the Weinstraße as a positive example
is particularly emphasized by Neustadt an der Weinstraße, which was the only city in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive the "green card" both in the area and in the green volume. This proves that even in cities with strong urbanization, protection against extreme heat can be realized by sufficient greening.
Need for urgent measures
With a view to the challenges resulting from increasing sealing, numerous municipal actors deal with concepts to improve the city climate. City climatologists like Sascha Henninger work to develop concrete measures in order to design the cities so that they can better defy the increasing temperatures. It is extremely important that both the municipalities and politics take this topic seriously and develop strategies for action.
Overall, the heat check of German environmental aid shows that there is an urgent need for action in order to ensure the quality of life in our cities even with extreme weather conditions.
