Bundeswehr blows up frigate Karlsruhe: test or danger to porpoise?
On Thursday, the Bundeswehr once again tested the decommissioned frigate "Karlsruhe" in the Baltic Sea area in front of Schleswig-Holstein with an impressive explosive load of 175 kilograms. This explosion, which is supposed to imitate a sea man, took place about four kilometers before Schönhagen and is part of a series of tests to vulnerability of naval ships. A smaller amount of 50 kilograms of explosives was already used on Tuesday. According to a Bundeswehr spokesman, everything went according to plan and the results are now evaluated. This series of tests will continue annually by 2028 to gain extensive knowledge for the construction of naval ships.
However, such explosions are criticized because the loud detonations can endanger the hearing of porpoises. In cooperation with environmental associations, the Bundeswehr has implemented security measures to protect the sea creatures, including an acoustic bladder veil that is supposed to weaken the sound waves under water. The results of these explosions are crucial to ensure the security of the future naval fleet and to better understand potential dangers, said a spokesman for the Bundeswehr procurement office.
