Karlsruhe threatens public transport collapse: savings plans in the focus of the transport companies!
The Karlsruhe Verkehrsbetriebe (VBK) faces a financial disaster: a deficit of over 100 million euros is added annually, and this number could increase to more than 140 million euros by 2029. In order to reduce the red figures, the Supervisory Board discusses drastic austerity measures that could have massive effects on the timetable. According to internal information, the clock could be extended from ten minutes to up to 30 minutes, which means that more than 30 percent of the inner -city offer is on the brink of tram and bus.
The savings plans are not only a burden for travelers - up to 100 full -time positions would also have to be painted for the most drastic cuts. The VBK target savings of 20 million euros per year, but even the largest savings variant would only bring 15.7 million euros and thus leave gap over four million euros. There is also fear that passengers could turn their back on public transport, which would undermine the savings goals. The municipal councils are now faced with the difficult decision as to whether these measures are worth the high price and what alternatives there are to combat the growing deficit, www.swr.de .
