Karlsruhe: Cooperation with Michelin: New perspectives for the area

revitalization of the Michelin area in Karlsruhe: One step into the future

The city of Karlsruhe and the tire manufacturer Michelin have taken a significant step to redesign the Michelin area in the west of the city. On July 25, 2024, Mayor Dr. Frank Mentrup and Christian Metzger, the director of the Karlsruhe location, a cooperation agreement. This agreement is not just a formal act, but also has the potential to change the economic landscape of the region sustainably.

a strong signal for the region

The agreement aims to promote the creation of new jobs and to secure the region's economic performance. Christian Metzger described the collaboration as crucial for the success of the revitalization: "In order for Michelin to succeed in the location initiated by Michelin, city and Michelin have to work closely together. We are pleased about the positive signals that we receive from the city of Karlsruhe."

practical steps to promote start -up

An essential part of this cooperation is the creation of a founding and commercial center for craft and small-producing businesses. The first mayor Gabriele Luczak-Schwarz formulated the importance of this development: "With the future-proof revitalization of this important area, an important contribution to interior development is made. At the same time, the framework conditions for craft and producing businesses can be optimized."

integration of the municipality

The municipal council unanimously approved the cooperation agreement on July 16, 2024 and previously paved the way for the field test of the founding center on June 18, 2024. This shows how important the city administration looks at cooperation with the economy for urban development. This could serve as a model for future projects.

upgrading the industrial location

With the signing of the agreement, the basics are laid in order to explore different usage scenarios for the approximately 126,000 square meter site. It is both checked how the existing buildings can be converted structurally, as well as to what extent the site can be opened up for new economic uses. The goal here is clear: an upgrading of the inventory that will benefit the city and the region in the long term.

look into the future

The gradual closure of the Michelin location until mid-2025, which was announced at the end of last year, also throws shadows on the region. However, with this newly founded partnership between the city and Michelin, the foundation stone is laid in order not only to master challenges, but also to create opportunities for economic innovation and jobs. The coming time will show how these preparations can result in concrete successes that work far beyond the borders of the Michelin area.
