New clothing regulations in Iran: Controls intensify for women

New dress code in Iranian schools adopted

Iran recently introduced a new dress code policy for schoolchildren in schools. This measure was decided by the highest cultural council and communicated to the authorities, the police and supervisory authorities. The new guideline suggests that pupils are strictly checked to adhere to the dress code, in particular the wearing of the headscarf.

In the past few months, violent controls have led to far-reaching criticism at home and abroad and have been a central topic in the school policy discourse. Even the later presidential candidate Massud Peseschkian criticized the controls of the supervisory bodies and promised to stop them immediately.

However, it remains questionable whether the moderate Peseschkian will be successful in this matter. The Parliament dominated by hardliners works on a draft law that provides stricter measures and draconian punishments in the event of violations of the dress code.

Since the introduction of school reform in September 2022, the Iranian education system has followed a stricter approach to enforcing the dress code rules. Pupils without a headscarf initially receive a warning. If you are repeated, you will be arrested and brought to the school management.

A trigger for school reform was the protests after the tragic death of the young Iranian student Mahsa Amini. She was arrested because some strands of hair were visible under her headscarf and later died in custody. - nag
