Refurbishment work at the Arlinger tunnel: traffic control in September
On May 13, 2024, an important event took place in Pforzheim: The first construction phase of the West Tangente, including the Arlinger tunnel, was officially released for traffic. This opening was an important step in the region's traffic planning, as it should relieve traffic and improve accessibility. However, the joy of the reopening did not last long, since only a few weeks later, in early June, with violent heavy rain events, an unforeseen incident occurred.
west of the northern portal of the Arlinger tunnel there was a slope slide in which material was solved. This incident required quick action, and already in mid -June the dissolved material was removed as part of a daily construction site, as was announced in a press release from the Karlsruhe regional council of June 17, 2024. This illustrates the challenges with which infrastructure projects can be confronted in a region that depends heavily on weather events.
renovation plans and construction site work
In order to counteract the damage to the tunnel and the surrounding areas, a renovation concept was created. The concept stipulates that the necessary construction work is taken over by an experienced construction company. The renovation work is planned for the period from 9 to September 12, 2024. During this time, not only the embankments are repaired, but also remaining work at the junction B 463 and the west tangent to the B 294, Wildbader Straße.
Special attention is paid to traffic management during the construction work. In the warmer hours of the day, outside of rush hour traffic between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., these are carried out in order to keep the impairments for road users as low as possible. During this time, the Arlinger tunnel is blocked in half side towards B 294 / Enztal. In order to be able to reliably redirect traffic, the barrier systems in the north tunnel apron are closed. A detour route that is signposted accordingly leads via the L 562, Dietlinger Straße and the B 294, Wildbader Straße.
The Karlsruhe regional council is aware of the inconvenience that this construction work brings and asks the road users for understanding the temporary stress and disabilities. Such measures are necessary to ensure the safety and functionality of the infrastructure in the long term.
