Ten years of anonymous birth: a safe way out for pregnant women in emergencies

child protection and anonymous birth - new ways for pregnant women in emergencies

Anonymous birth celebrates its tenth anniversary this year as an effective measure to protect newborns in emergencies. This possibility enables pregnant women to give birth confidentially and to hand over their babies safely without disclosing personal data. Despite the low use of this option in southwestern Germany in the past ten years, it remains an important alternative to prevent childhoods and expenses.

The importance of confidential birth

Anonymous birth, which was introduced in 2014, serves as a legal alternative to the baby flap and offers women in emergencies a safe way to release their babies for adoption. With 1600 pregnancy advice centers across the country, women are intensively looked after and accompanied during pregnancy and after birth to help them in difficult situations.

The right to origin

An important aspect of anonymous birth is the child's right to know his birth mother. After 16 years there is the possibility for the confidential children to inquire about their origin. This step is considered crucial for the personal development of the children.

baby flaps as an emergency solution

In addition to the anonymous birth, women also have the opportunity to hand over their newborns in baby flaps. Although there are no official statistics, a total of 116 babies have been housed in baby flaps in Baden-Württemberg since 2001. However, this step should be regarded as the last emergency solution.

Anonymous birth has proven to be effective in the past ten years to help pregnant women in need. With over 3500 consultations on this topic in pregnancy advice centers and a high acceptance rate among the women concerned, it is an important step to ensure child protection in Germany.
