Construction work in the Unterneustadt: changes in traffic and diversions 2024

extensive road work in the Lower Neustadt: Effects on residents and traffic

A new construction phase in the Lower Neustadt is imminent, which will last from July 29, 2024 to July 2025. The city has decided to invest around 1.5 million euros in the expansion of Bädergasse, Bettenhäuser Straße west of Sternstraße, Sternstrasse northeast of Bettenhäuser Straße and the western part of the wood market. These extensive street work will not only improve the infrastructure, but also have an important impact on the accessibility and traffic in the affected area.

measures to ensure accessibility

In order to ensure the accessibility of the neighborhood during the construction work, a provisional connection is created. The Bettenhäuser Straße and Bädergasse are linked to Leipziger Strasse. This is made possible by using the currently blocked fire brigade access on the wood market. If the Bettenhäuser Straße between Bädergasse and Sternstraße is completely blocked, residents have to fall back on this provisional connection in order to enter or leave the neighborhood. The city has announced that they are clearly identified by affected diversions, so that the residents do not remain unclear.

Planning the diversions for various road users

In particular, bicycle traffic will be affected by the changes. The original course of the R1 cycle route is redirected. Cyclists no longer have to go through the lock park, but are led over Hafenstraße to the Unterneustädter Kirchplatz. The sidewalk in Bettenhäuser Strasse, which has already been completed, also remains accessible. These measures are intended to ensure that despite the construction activities, the mobility of the residents and visitors of the neighborhood is preserved.

parking situation and compensation

Since public parking spaces are not available in both Sternstraße and on Bettenhäuser Straße during the construction period, it will be more difficult for residents and commuters to find a parking space. A compensation of the eliminating parking spaces is not possible due to the existing parking pressure in the neighborhood. However, an alternative parking lot, the Leister Wiese, offers a walk -in accessibility to the western Lower Lower City.

Important information for road users

The start of road construction work on July 29, 2024 is to be expected. The road traffic authority recommends that all road users take the construction site into account when planning their trips in order to avoid inconvenience. The extensive measures should ultimately lead to an improvement in the infrastructure, and the city hopes that the residents can understand the temporary restrictions.
