Chaos in front of the elementary school: City of Kiel changes to school streets!
In front of the elementary school at Heidenberger Teich in Kiel there is a traffic chaos in the morning: up to 70 cars park in the turning hammer at the same time while parents let their children get out. These dangerous scenes meant that the civil engineering office of the city of Kiel and the school presented a pilot project for a temporary blocking of the Skagenweg - for 30 minutes before the start and after the end of the lesson. According to the headmistress Ulrike Schmidt-Hansen, the school has only experienced small accidents with a total of 460 students, including a run over, but the situation remains tense.
In addition, a barrier is planned to regulate traffic. Experts are currently developing the exact details and are focusing on involving parents, residents and the Mettenhof local advisory board. The goal? More security in front of school and the reduction of parent taxis. The school conference is scheduled to vote on Monday by the traffic attempt. In the school year 2025/2026 at the latest, to see whether the so -called “Schulstraße” actually brings promising results. The pressure on the city of Kiel is growing, because many parents are concerned about chaos and the associated dangers. This dramatic situation is also pursued by other municipalities that have taken similar measures.
