THW Kiel: On title course despite injury concerns and new staff

The hunt for a title has started for the German record champion THW Kiel. After the past season ended with just a disappointing fourth place, the club did everything possible to set the course for a successful future. In order to seriously talk to the championship in the Daikin handball Bundesliga, numerous reinforcements were obliged.

The most prominent newcomer is the national goalkeeper Andreas Wolff, who was brought back from Kielce in Poland for 300,000 euros. In addition to Wolff, the right winger Lukas Zerbe from TBV Lemgo and the Hungarian player Bence Imre from Ferencváros are also new to the team. Emil Madsen also came from GOG from Denmark. Dr. Marc Weinstock, the Supervisory Board Chairman of the THW, is optimistic: "We have increased massively, on and off the field. Our obligations are impressive. The return to the Champions League must be the goal, we are targeting that."

challenges and injury problems

Despite the reinforced team, there are large worry lines. Shortly before the start of the season, the THW reports alarming injury problems. Harald Reinkind will be missing from February 2025 due to a heel operation. Tomas Mrkva also had to undergo a meniscus surgery, and other players such as Elias Ellefsen a Skipagotu, Hendrik Pekeler, Rune Dahmke and Nikola Bile suffer from injuries that delay their return. These personnel bottlenecks present the Trainer Filip Jicha with a big challenge: "It shouldn't sound like whining, but we are currently fighting with failures and injuries. Against this background, the first match day will be a big challenge for us."

The start of the season will take place on September 5 against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen, which will be a test for the troops that have become stronger according to their own requirements right from the start. Managing Director Viktor Szilagyi points out that the club does not think about resting on its laurels: "We want to get better," says Szilagyi. Even if the path to the Champions League appears stony, the determination of the association remains unbroken. The THW Kiel pursues its goals with excellent strategy and ambition.

The return of Andreas Wolff is seen as the key to a successful season. Wolff himself describes the THW as the first address in Germany for long -term success: "The THW will have a say. My mission was not yet complete at the time. I wanted to win a championship in my life," explains Wolff confidently. He demands that you quickly start a success series and hopes not only to give the fans joy on the screens, but also in the hall.
