U17 submarine: Spectacular journey on trucks through the Neckar
Unusual journey of a decommissioned submarine!
The submarine U17, which has been in use for 50 years and was retired by the Federal Navy in 2010, is embarking on an unusual journey. After it was transported from Kiel to Speyer last year, the last stage is now pending: the trip to the Sinsheim Technology Museum. This former military device with a length of about 50 meters was made easier for transport to make room for new exhibits. With a budget of around two million euros, largely financed from donations, this project is a milestone for the technology museums Sinsheim and Speyer.
On Saturday, the difficult landing of the submarine in Haßmersheim began, at which "millimeter work" was necessary to load the submarine onto the truck. The challenge is to take the Neckar flow into account in order to safely bring the submarine to the shore. The rotation of the pontoon and the transport of the submarine on land require precise planning and implementation, since the weight of the submarine is considerable.
After the Neckar near Haßmersheim was closed to shipping, the submarine could be invited to the truck. The 100-meter-long truck with 30 axles and 240 wheels will transport the submarine through close curves, town crossings and railway underpasses to the Sinsheim Technology Museum. Coping this route again requires precisely maneuvers and careful planning to get the submarine safely to your destination.
During the transport on the Rhine and the Neckar, countless onlookers persecuted the submarine and celebrated his arrival at various stations. The local communities and clubs along the transport route planned numerous festivals and events to appreciate the memorable event and to celebrate the arrival of the submarine.
The last section of the trip is still imminent when the submarine arrives on Sunday, July 28th, in the Technik Museum in Sinsheim. A milestone in the history of the museum and a remarkable performance in logistics that emphasize the importance of this historical submarine and its journey.
Follow the exciting journey of the submarine, from its retirement to transport to the museum, and experience the precision and planning that is necessary to successfully complete such a project.
