Young people are researching active: Water examination at Bimbach in Kitzingen

commitment to nature in the Kitzingen room

As part of an exciting project for researching local waters, 13 nature enthusiasts recently met, including nine young people between the ages of twelve to fifteen, on the renatured section of the Bimbach, which runs between Kitzingen and Großlangheim. This event was organized by the BUND Nature Conservation district group Kitzingen and shows the growing interest of the younger generation for environmental and nature conservation.

young people as researchers and environmentalists

The participants took the opportunity to examine the ecological condition of the flowing waters in their region. Johannes Kroiß, the 1st chairman of the district group, expressed his great praise for the commitment of the young people and declared the importance of the flow project, which is supported by the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research and by the BUND nature conservation. "Our data is crucial for future protection and renaturation measures," says Kroiß.

The effects of research on water quality

Divided into two groups, the young environmentalists researched under professional guidance. While one group researched the water fauna, the other dealt with the analysis of water quality. The team that examined the fauna discovered diverse organisms, including crustaceans, water snails and various species of larvae, which indicates a positive development of the water. At the same time, the water investigations showed that the nitrate and phosphate values in the stream water are still too high, which indicates a further need for action.

The commitment of the young people as a model

Despite the challenging heat, the young people showed excellent research spirit and perseverance. Her commitment is not only important for the direct environment, but also reflects a larger trend: more and more young people are actively committed to protecting their environment. This development is crucial in order to leave intact nature to future generations.

conclusion: Discover and preserve diversity in nature

The project on the Bimbach is an impressive example of how education and practical action go hand in hand to protect the local environment. In the interaction of science, youth engagement and the support of institutions, approaches arise that are urgently needed for the renaturation and preservation of our waters. The active participation of young people could be the key to forming consciousness in society and thus helping to fill future nature conservation measures with life.
