The importance of Limes Cicerones for the cultural heritage in North Rhine-Westphalia
The Roman border facilities on the Rhine not only represent a fascinating epoch in history, but have also been recognized as a World Heritage Site for three years. In order to actively convey the knowledge of this historical border and its remains, which are often hidden in the earth, guides will be trained with the title "Limes-Cicerones" from autumn.
insight into the training and the role of the German Limes Commission
The course organized by the German Limes Commission aims to train participants in the history and the military structures of ancient Rome. Information about the equipment of the soldiers and their living conditions is treated to draw a comprehensive picture of this time. In addition to practical components, this training will also take place online and is expected to be completed by mid -2025.
cities and regions of historical importance
The relics of the Limes Limes extend over 19 municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia, including Cologne, Neuss and Bonn. This region, which has a length of 220 kilometers between Bonn and Kleve, harbors valuable remains of castles, legion lagers and civil settlements, which played an important role in Roman history. Despite their cultural importance, many of these sites are not easy to recognize because they are often hidden underground.
World cultural heritage and municipal identity
"We have something unique here," says Suzana Matešić, the managing director of the German Limes Commission, about the ancient border facility. This legacy is not only under the protection of the UNESCO, but is also an important part of the region's cultural identity. The implementation of uniform signage and the development of a bike and hiking trail are currently being planned to increase the accessibility and awareness of these important historical sites.
a valuable legacy for future generations
The recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage on July 27, 2021 was a milestone in the history of the Lime Limes. It shows the need and the value to keep the historical context alive for future generations. The training of Limes-Cicerones not only strengthens the local community, but also promoted a broader awareness of the rich Roman history of Germany.
