Kreis Mayen-Koblenz: Enthusiastic cyclists set signs for environmental protection

an impressive result for climate protection

This year's “City Cycling” campaign has produced a remarkable result in the Mayen-Koblenz district. From June 9th to 29th June 2023, 781 committed cyclists covered a total of 168,680 kilometers. This performance is not only a proof of the growing switch to bicycle as an environmentally friendly means of transport, but also a significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions. With this campaign, around 28 tons of CO2 could be saved.

participants and teams in focus

The campaign mobilized a large number of participants, including sports clubs, companies, schools and non-profit organizations such as the Technical Relief Agency and the German Life Rescue Society. The variety of participants is a sign of the broad interest in climate -friendly mobility and shows that both institutions and private individuals are willing to work for environmental protection.

strong achievements of the teams

The team "Power through fruit and vegetables" from the Mendig community is particularly noteworthy, which laid the greatest distance at 17,758 kilometers. This corresponds to an average mileage of 986.5 kilometers per member. The team thus made a valuable contribution to CO2 savings with almost three tons. The integrated comprehensive school Maifeld from Polch and the Bertha-von-Suttner-Gymnasium also show strong services by cycling over 18,000 kilometers and thus saving a total of 6.3 tons of CO2.

a community on the way to improvement

The excellent use in the Weißenthurm Association is also remarkable. Here around 160 participants cycled almost 29,000 kilometers and thus prevented five tons of CO2 emissions. The fact that the number of participants here has been quinted since 2022 testifies to a convincing community initiative that serves as a model for other regions.

exemplary initiative for the whole country

The "City Cycling" campaign, which was launched by the climate alliance, relies on a friendly competition between municipalities in order to promote awareness of sustainable mobility. With its outstanding result, the district of Mayen-Koblenz shows how important such initiatives are for climate protection. "Every kilometer counts," emphasizes Charlotte Kleinschmidt, the district cycling officer, and encourages the continuation of the commitment for the coming year.

climate protection and mobility as future -oriented topics

The city cycling with its impressive numbers is not only a local initiative, but also plays a role in the nationwide strategy for reducing CO2 emissions by 2030.
