Zurzibiet in turmoil: new purchasing tax hits the cross -border commuter!
From 2025, Switzerland tilts the exemption for purchases abroad! The threshold falls from CHF 300 to CHF 150 - and VAT is due even when purchasing. This decision is causing great resentment in the Zurzibiet region. Commercial representatives are calling for a complete abolition of the exemption limit to involve the state in the income from shopping tourists. Beat Rudolf, President of the Rhine Valley Trade Association Rheintal Studenland, criticizes that Swiss customers benefit unjustly when purchasing abroad, while domestic companies go away empty -handed.
The region already feels traffic jams through buying Swiss. Matthias Schifferli from the Zurzibiet Economic Forum sees the measure a pure “alibi exercise” that could rather strengthen traffic. In addition, German retailers who are strongly dependent on Swiss customers complain about the upcoming decline in sales. One study shows that around 50 percent of their sales comes from Swiss shopping tourists. Despite the new regulation, nothing significant could change for the Swiss - VAT rates are still lower compared to Germany. More information about the revised measures can be found in the report at www.aargauerzeitung.ch .
