Feldhamster rescue: This is how our rodents bloom thanks to successful species protection!
The 31st International Hamster Conference took place in Cologne, where experts from all over the world discussed the protection of the endangered field hamster. The focus was particularly on the successful resettlement of this fascinating animal species in the Cologne region, which was first carried out in Pulheim and Rommerskirchen in 2019. Thanks to the “Feldhamster NRW” species protection project, over 700 Feldhamster now live in the wild in North Rhine-Westphalia.Originally, the field hamster in NRW was almost extinct, which represents an alarming Situation for biodiversity. Environment Minister Oliver Krischer emphasized the urgency to actively counteract the loss of species. With innovative nature conservation measures and close cooperation between different actors, suitable habitats were created for the field hamsters. Despite the encouraging progress, the continued existence of the species remains at risk, since their habitats are still threatened, as the conference participants unanimously stated.
