Switzerland pays 50 million: Electrification of the high Rhine route comes!
Laufenburg, Deutschland - Deutsche Bahn plans to start construction work in the third or fourth quarter of 2025 to electrify the high Rhine line between Basel and Constance. The entire route is to be electrified and modernized by the end of 2027, which means farewell to diesel locomotives in this region. On the 75 -kilometer route, 18 stops are converted barrier -free and three new stops are set up. There are also extensive construction work, including the lowering and laying of tracks as well as the construction of bridges in the Laufenburg and Waldshut-Tiengen regions.
The Swiss government is financially participating in the project with over 50 million euros, the total costs of which amount to more than 430 million euros. The commissioning of the electrical trains is planned for the end of 2027. The Federal Railway Authority is currently examining the necessary permits for the construction work on the German side, while in Switzerland there is already a planning permit for the section near Erzingen. Deutsche Bahn emphasizes that the current plans are adjusted in such a way that the construction work is as smooth as possible and the restrictions for passengers and residents are minimized.
