Volunteer Prize 2023: Sebastian Schraps for play without satchel
In a solemn ceremony in the Linner Museum Scheune, the honorary office "with each other" was awarded to Sebastian Schraps, which has been active for the "Game without satchel" campaign for 25 years. Mayor Frank Meyer presented the prize and emphasized the importance of the young volunteer office that it is not just a matter of older generations. For Schraps, which is only 36 years old, this award not only means personal recognition, but also an appreciation of the work that he does together with many other volunteers in Krefeld.
The roots of Sebastian Schraps' commitment are deeply anchored in the history of his family. His grandmother, Annemarie Schraps, founded the holiday games in 1975 to enable children who could not travel to enable a fulfilled summer vacation. This initiative was the beginning of a project that quickly developed into an institution in Krefeld. From an early age, the young Schraps was a fixture in this community and was actively involved in the age of 11, even if it was actually still too young at that time to be officially part of the team.
a model for the community
The handover of the honorary office award stands not only for recognition of individual services, but also for the appreciation of the collective commitment of numerous volunteers. Mayor Meyer emphasized in his eulogy: "Sebastian Schraps symbolizes all those who, with their voluntary work, bring the 'game without satchel' to life again every year." Recognition is a strong sign of how important volunteering in society is and how crucial the role of young people becomes for its continued existence. Schraps and his friend Sascha Yildiz took great responsibility in the organization team after the death of his grandmother.
This prize, which was awarded for the third time, is endowed with 5,000 euros and was launched on personal initiative by Mayor Meyer. He represents a further step to honor volunteering more. The trophy that received the Schraps was designed by students from the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, which further underlines the local reference and community.
As the mayor emphasized, the commitment of Schraps not only brings joie de vivre for numerous children, but also acts as a source of inspiration for others. "If you invest so much, you not only have to have a big heart, but also an enormous energy," remarked Meyer. This quote aptly summarizes passion, the schraps and many others show in their work for Krefeld.
The award of the honorary office prize not only reflects the honor of Sebastian Schraps, but also gives the topic of volunteering a considerable status in urban society. At a time when social responsibility and cooperation appear more important than ever, the appreciation of volunteers is an invaluable gesture to focus on their contribution to the community.
