Increasing unemployment in Krefeld and Kreis Viersen in August 2023
Increasing unemployment in Krefeld and Kreis Viersen in August 2023
The current unemployment figures in the area of responsibility of the Krefeld Employment Agency and in the district of Viersen do not look rosy. In August 2023, unemployment increased significantly compared to the previous month. Sarah Borgloh, the chairwoman of the Krefeld Employment Agency, found that this increase affects all groups of people - both the younger ones and the elderly. A hesitant behavior in new hires and the later end of the school holidays in mid -August seem to be significant factors. This has led to an increase in the unemployment report from current employment relationships.
In the entire agency district, 23,640 people are now unemployed, which corresponds to an increase of 475 people compared to July. In this region, 6,962 people are currently being looked after by the employment agency, which is an increase of 70 assistance compared to the previous month. In addition, there are 16,678 unemployed people who are looked after by the job centers, which corresponds to an increase of 405 people.
Comparison of unemployment between Krefeld and the district of Viersen
An interesting point is the difference in the unemployment figures between the district of Viersen and the city of Krefeld. While unemployment in the district of Viersen has increased slightly to 5.9 percent (July: 5.8 percent, August 2022: 5.6 percent), Krefeld is significantly higher with an unemployment rate of 11.1 percent (July: 10.9 percent, August 2022: 10.5 percent). This imbalance is also evident in the individual branches: the unemployment rate in Kempen, responsible for the municipalities of Kempen, Grefrath and Tönisvorst, rose to 4.7 percent (in the previous year: 4.5 percent). Nettetal has a quota of 6.0 percent, which also corresponds to an increase compared to the previous year, while the Viersen branch recorded a quota of 6.5 percent.
Another aspect that should not be disregarded is the training market. Up to August, 3,493 apprenticeships were reported for the entire agency district, which presents 17 more compared to the previous year. At the same time, 2,997 young people were looking for an apprenticeship, which corresponds to an increase of 169 compared to the previous year. This means that many potential trainees are still looking for a suitable training, while the number of places offered has not increased significantly and therefore there is a slight agreement between supply and demand.
The current situation on the labor market in the Viersen district and in Krefeld raises questions. Is the increase in unemployment a short -term trend, or do we have to adapt to persistent challenges? The hesitation of employers to create new jobs could still exacerbate an already difficult situation. This focuses not only on economic considerations, but also the social effects that are accompanied by an increased number of unemployment. The coming months will be decisive to see whether the trends change and whether the labor market situation is relaxed or further tightened.
