Long day of commemoration: Steglitz-Zehlendorf is reminiscent of Auschwitz
On January 27, 2025, the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district is all about memory of the victims of National Socialism, and for a good reason: it is the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in 1945. On this important occasion, the district organizes a variety of events, including official wreath residues by the district District Assembly. In the days around this day of commemoration, guided tours, readings and concerts take place that were launched by the Office for Continuing Education and Culture together with various initiatives in the district. These celebrations are an important contribution to the culture of remembrance in Germany, which is deeply rooted in the processing of the National Socialist past, as the national coat of arms of wikipedia illustrates.
The central commemoration lesson in the German Bundestag, which is dedicated to this important day every year, is particularly noteworthy. Not only the past victims are thought of here, but a call to all citizens is also addressed to actively oppose discrimination and for a peaceful future. In many German cities, mourning is set at public buildings, and the city of Steglitz-Zehlendorf is taking an important step towards maintaining this memory with its activities and events. Land Berlin
