Saxony artist brings home to the slate: exhibition in the Erzhammer!

Philip Schaarschmidt, a talented 27-year-old artist from the Annaberg-Buchholz region, brings the beauty of his homeland to slate. He prints traditional representations that are deeply rooted in Saxony's culture on regional materials. The exhibition in the Erzhammer cultural center presents its latest works and runs until the end of May.

The idea of painting on slate came up by a request from the tourist information that souvenir stones were looking for. Schaarschmidt originally tried to paint river stones, but the different sizes of the stones were a challenge. Instead, he now uses slate slabs that he received from friends who work in the slate deck craft. “Brush binder” is one of his latest linocut motifs that reflect the regional craftsmanship.

diverse presentation in the Erzhammer

The exhibition in the Erzhammer not only shows the prints, but also a variety of traditional motifs. A highlight is a representation of a lace that focuses on Saxony's craftsmanship. The different floors of the Erzhammer are divided: On the second floor, excerpts from Schaarschmidt's journal can be seen via his travels to the Caribbean and to South America. On the top floor there are illustrations that are inspired by lyrics and personal thoughts.

As a further addition, Philip Schaarschmidt offers linol printing courses in the Erzhammer in order to give interested parties the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of printing. For more information, his offers are available on the website www.studio-scarcia.de
