Surprise in the Amazon: Indigener man appears in the village!
A young man from an isolated indigenous community caused a sensation on Wednesday evening in the municipality of Bela Rosa, located on the Purus river in the southwest of the Amazon area of Brazil. The man appeared barefoot and dressed in a small lumbar. In his hands he held two pieces of wood and looked calm and healthy overall. Residents suspected that he was looking for fire. A villager tried to show him dealing with a lighter, which was unsuccessful. Officials from the Brazilian indigenous authority Funai arrived to bring him to a nearby facility. On Thursday afternoon the young man finally returned to the forest.
Health experts examined the man to determine possible diseases, against which isolated indigenous groups have no defenses. Due to the dangers that can arise from contacts with outsiders, surveillance was set up to prevent contact with the community. In Brazil, one follows a policy that does not actively seek contact with uncontacted groups; Rather, protected areas are set up and monitored. One of these protected areas, Mamoriá Grande, is located near the incident
The Massaco: An isolated community
The community from which the young man comes is called "Massaco", named after the river that flows through its area. However, their exact personal names are unknown. According to reports, the Massaco community has not been contacted since the 1990s and has at least doubled. Current estimates are between 200 and 250 people in this isolated group. According to the information from Funai, automatic cameras have given the latest insights into the life of the Massaco in the Brazilian rainforest. These show that the community hunted with three meters long arches and take its villages seasonally in the forest.
The Massaco are under pressure from farmers and illegal trial tests. Despite these threats, the community seems to thrive. Funai has placed special cameras in one place where metal tools are regularly left as gifts. This measure aims to protect the uncontacted people. However, there is no reliable information about the language, social structures and belief systems of Massaco. Algayer from Funai emphasizes similarities between the Massaco and the Sirionó-Volk in Bolivia.
The threat of indigenous peoples in the Amazon area
The situation in the Amazon area is tense. The indigenous peoples, including the Massaco, face each other not only the challenges of illegal deforestation, but also by gold -seeking migrants. It is estimated that there are around 10,000 to 20,000 illegal gold seekers in the Yanomami protection area, which significantly affects the living conditions of the indigenous population living there. The Brazilian government is criticized not to drive enough to drive these gold seekers, which results in the destruction of the rainforest and contamination of watercourses with mercury.
The existence of indigenous groups in the Amazon area are still highly at risk. Brazil introduced a policy in 1987 to avoid contact with uncontacted peoples after many died from illnesses. This policy is now also taken over by neighboring countries such as Peru, Colombia and Ecuador. Nevertheless, the threat for the Massaco and similar communities remains present, while international and local organizations urge the need for protective measures to preserve the culture and living space of these peoples.
