Borkum starts new housing cooperative: land wanted!

On the north German island of Borkum, an important initiative has laid the foundation for future living space. The foundation of a housing cooperative was successfully carried out on August 31, 2023 as part of an official meeting. This cooperative pursues the goal of securing land and real estate on the island and thus improving the living situation for the islanders.

The founding team was able to mobilize enough support from insulans and visitors, which was decisive for the successful start of the project. Board member Marius Okken explained the motivation behind this initiative. "We went this path to show the cooperative association that we can win the necessary number of business shares and interested parties to prove sufficient potential equity," said Okken. This is a crucial step to create the legal basis for the cooperative.

The structure of the cooperative

At the founding meeting, not only the board was elected, but also the supervisory board was staffed. Marius Okken and Hinnerk Tiedeken now form the first board of the cooperative, while Torsten Müller will be the chairman of the Supervisory Board, supported by Marc Arends and Niklas Meeuw. However, the legal recognition of the cooperative is still pending because it is currently in the phase of notarial certification and entry in the cooperative register. Hinnerk Tiedeken emphasized the urgency to complete this process as soon as possible in order to start work quickly.

The cooperative already respects the interest of the population and has announced that all interested parties are informed of opportunities for membership as soon as the legal requirements are met.

public information events and future steps

Another public information event is planned for November, in which the tasks of the cooperative and the opportunities for participation are to be presented in detail. In the meantime, interested parties can find out about current developments via the website www.borkumerwohnspämäumenossensossenschaft.de and have it entered in the interested list.

A central concern of the cooperative is the purchase of real estate and land. "If there are sellers or real estate sellers, we look forward to contacting them," said Hinnerk Tiedeken. With the founding of this cooperative, the aim is to keep real estate assets and the land in the hands of the island community, which is of great importance for the future development of Borkum. This initiative will help address the challenges of the lack of housing and to offer the islanders long -term perspectives.
