UCR in the conflict: debate about Lijo and gender parity in the judiciary

The President of the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR), Martín Lousteau, today led an internal discussion about the nominations of Ariel Lijo and Manuel García Mansilla, which was proposed by President Javier Milei to fill vacancies in the Supreme Court. Despite a two -hour debate, no uniform position within the party could be found, which led to the decision to postpone the negotiations to a "quarter of an hour".

A central topic during the meeting was the resistance to Lijo, driven primarily by the Vice President of the National Committee, Luis Naidenoff and Inés Brizuela y Doria. Both call on the national leadership of the UCR to recommend the block of the block to reject Lijos nomination. Brizuela y Doria emphasized the lack of women in the proposed body and thus criticized the proposals made by Milei that violated the premise of gender parity.

internal challenges and debates

As part of the debate, it was discussed about the opportunity to instruct the senators, to pronounce themselves against Lijo, especially since Lousteau's leadership had already communicated in the past to reject the planned measures. Nevertheless, the members of the UCR leadership decided to avoid a clear statement and instead to find a basis of trust with the five governors of the block and the mayors.

The discussion took place at a critical time, while the Kirchner supporters put pressure on Casa Rosada to accelerate an agreement on an extension of the Supreme Court. The development of these discussions is also closely observed in the UCR, since some politicians believe that hesitation is a strategic decision to prevent future exclusions on important political questions.

Within the UCR, there are different opinions about Lijo's nomination. Supporters such as Emiliano Yacobitti and Daniel Angelici stand against the negative voices within the UCR, which also include NAIDENOFF and Brizuela y Doria, which question the suitability and role model function of Lijo for the highest courtyard.

political uncertainties and possible consequences

The uncertainty about Lijo's nomination and the controversial composition of the court stirs up fears and tensions among the party members, especially those that are political ambitions. Some members express concerns that if Lijo is not called to the Supreme Court, he could continue to work as a judge in the Comodoro PY, which makes the questions about his profile even more complicated.

The governors of the provinces, especially Alfredo Cornejo and Maximiliano Pullaro, are disagreed with the effects of milis suggestions and shy away from a public statement. Cornejo expressed that the nomination of Lijo confusion in the ranks of the supporters of the government, and he is currently not making a clear position.

Currently only three of the thirteen UCR senators have announced that they are voted against Lijo's proposal. This indecisiveness could further reduce the influence of the UCR in the political game in the future should the composition of the court move further.

At the end of the session, it remained unclear how the UCR will react to the nomination, since another session has been set to wait for ongoing discussions and public opinion.
