Leipzig shines: 35 years of peaceful revolution ceremoniously recognized!
On Tuesday, October 9, 2024, Leipzig celebrates the 35th anniversary of the peaceful revolution with a light festival. The central celebration takes place in the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, where Chancellor Olaf Scholz will give a speech on democracy. The former GDR citizens' rights activist Marianne Birthler is also expected for the speeches. The whole thing is accompanied musically by the Gewandhaus Orchestra under the direction of Semyon bychkov and scenic contributions from the Theater of the Young World. The ceremony is only accessible on invitation, but is broadcast live on television.
In memory of the historical events in 1989, the light festival will take place on the inner city ring from 7 p.m. to midnight. Over 20 artists present impressive light installations and performances that take up the roots of the demonstrations. The opening takes place at 7 p.m. on Augustusplatz with greetings from Mayor Burkhard Jung and contemporary witnesses. The light festival is enriched by numerous international partner cities, including Frankfurt am Main and Krakow, and offers a diverse program. In addition, the traditional candle-89 are available to visitors to celebrate memory with thousands of lights. Further information and the complete program are on www.l-iz.de
