Leipzig's labor market: stability despite the increase in unemployment figures
The labor market situation in Leipzig presents itself as stable in August 2024. With 26,460 unemployed people, the number remained higher compared to the same month last year, but the unemployment rate was constantly 7.7 percent. This situation is surprising, since there is usually a slight increase in unemployment in August, as Ricardo Donat, the chairman of the management of the Leipzig Employment Agency.
The stagnating quota is not considered a negative sign. Donat explains that the labor market in Leipzig performs well despite the stable number of unemployment. The city remains a central catalyst for the economic development in the West Saxony region. This indicates that additional jobs are created, although the data for the number of employment will only be available at a later date due to its half -year publication.
A look at unemployment
The Saxony region has a positive development overall. According to Klaus-Peter Hansen from the Saxony Regional Directorate of the Federal Employment Agency, the end of the summer holidays show signs of decline in unemployment. Many people have found a new job after the summer break or started their training again. This is underlined by increasing employment and returning to qualification measures that are intended to promote the individual acquisition of competence.
Despite a general decline in unemployment, youth unemployment remains a challenge. While the total number of the unemployed in the Leipzig district shows similar values, the number of unemployed young people under the age of 25 is still 2,900. This group is faced with an increase of 76 people or 2.7 percent compared to the previous year.
Long -term unemployed in Leipzig recorded a slight decline in 6,610 people in August, which corresponds to 39 less than in July. Compared to the previous year, however, the number shows an increase of 529 long -term people employed. The legal area SGB III shows 9,245 unemployed for August, which represents a significant increase around 699 compared to the previous year.
Current developments on the job market
The job market in Leipzig is also in the river. In August, 7,666 jobs were reported, which corresponds to a decline by 275 positions compared to the previous month. In the previous year comparison, the number is reduced by 1,719 positions or 18 percent. Employers have reported 1,178 new jobs, which means a decline of 29 percent. Nevertheless, the demand for workers in certain economic sectors remains strong, especially in the temporary employment agency, in the healthcare system and in the area of technical services.
The number of needs communities fell to 31,361, 177 less than in the previous month and 104 less than in the previous year. At the same time, the JobCenter Leipzig currently looks after 39,866 beneficiaries, which corresponds to a small increase compared to the previous year.
This market development gives rise to optimism, even if some companies are still hesitant in attitudes, especially for young professionals. The increasing underemployment in this age group could be a persistent problem for the future. In summary, it remains to be seen that Leipzig's labor market still offers possibilities for professional integration at a time of constant challenges.
