Tiger lady Angara: tragic loss in the Schwerin Zoo
Sad news reaches us from the Schwerin Zoo, where the beloved Tigerer Angara, who comes from Leipzig, died unexpectedly. The incident happened on Saturday, August 3, and made both visitors and the nursing staff in the zoo deeply affected. Angara was born in the Leipzig Zoo in 2009 and came to Schwerin a year later.
The circumstances of their death are particularly tragic. Witnesses reported that Angara, while moving on the edge of a pond, suddenly suffered a seizure and fell into the water. Unfortunately, nobody was able to save them in time, and it is believed that they drowned. Now the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Berlin is trying to clarify the exact cause of their seizures, which reinforces the tragedy of the incident.
Details of the incident
Two pedagogical aspects stand out: On the one hand, Angara was well known for her original joy in the game, especially on hot days when she often went into the water to cool off. A tree stump that led over the pond has not yet been removed because it balanced regularly and safely over it. The nursing staff had not seen any reason to change the conditions because Angara was mentally and physically active until her death.
But on this fateful day the unimaginable happened. The visitors saw Angara suddenly got out of balance and plunged into the water. Alarmed by the screams of those present, the zoo staff immediately intervened. The nurses, accompanied by a zoo veterinarian, went to the enclosure to look for Angara. Since nobody knew the exact place where it had fallen, the Situation was particularly desperate.
The search finally ended tragically when they discovered the body of the tiger on the bottom of the pond. The moment of knowledge was shocking for everyone involved. Supporting colleagues and quick decisions were of the greatest importance within this emotional burden to find the best solution for the moment.
The pain of the department
"Angara was mentally completely present, active and dynamic until the last day," said zoo director Tim Schikora in an emotional contribution on Facebook. His words illustrate the deep loss that the team suffers, especially the main nurses who had built up an intimate relationship with the Tiger for years. "It is something that puts us on the team," added Schikora.
This unexpected tragedy also has the idea of the safety and well -being of other animals in the facility. Zoo Director Schikora emphasized the importance of team spirit and the fast, professional action in such a critical situation. The zoo will check all precautions in the coming days and possibly make adjustments to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The painful farewell to Angara will not only touch the nursing staff, but also the visitors to the zoo. Their history will be a memorial for the importance of animal care and surveillance in Zoos, while the scientists continue to try to understand the exact causes of their illness.
