Zoo Leipzig says goodbye: sad farewell to tapir lady Laila
In the Leipzig zoo, there are exciting news that many animal lovers could move. Although the zoo, which presents over 600 different species annually and inspires innovative virtual reality experiences, is known in a positive atmosphere, there are also sad moments. Recently, those responsible for the zoo announced a foreseeable loss that affects visitors and the team.
On Thursday, July 25th, the sad decision was announced that the Samplacken Tapir female Laila, lovingly called Kaila by most visitors, is moving to the Dortmund Zoo. This decision, which is based on the recommendation of the European Conservation Breeding Program (EEP), was made to promote genetic diversity within European population stocks. "The farewell has not been easy for us," explains junior curator Ariel Jacken, and this also applies to the nursing team and the loyal visitors that Kaila has been able to observe for a long time.
from Leipzig to Dortmund - a necessary step
The 15-year-old tapir lady is not simply relocated, but is hoping for a new future. In Dortmund, a potential partner is already waiting to be used to testify to a new Generation of schawaka tapires. This is particularly important because the species is considered to be very threatened. The efforts to preserve these special animals are of great importance, and Kaila has already provided offspring several times in the past before moving to ústí nad Labem.
Visitors to the zoo will surely notice the changes in the enclosure. The enclosure is currently empty, and this emptiness is perceived by many as a painful farewell. However, hope is known to die lastly: According to jackets, both a tapirbulle from Copenhagen and a female from England should come to Leipzig in the near future. After a familiarization period, the zoo operators hope for young people, which is not only for the zoo, but also for the preservation of the kind of great importance.
The news of Kaila's move at the Leipzig Zoo undoubtedly created a melancholic mood. Nevertheless, the team remains optimistic and does everything possible to keep the way. The Leipzig Zoo remains an important place for species and nature conservation, and the connection between the various zoo in Europe plays an essential role. By coordinating breeding programs and animal implementations, better chances of survival can be created for endangered species.
